How Do Electronic Cigarettes Work?

Written By Michael Bluestone - September 27, 2012

Do you recall as a child when you had a cold accompanied by a sore throat and your mother would put a vaporizer in your room to add moisture to the air as a means of reducing your cough and discomfort during sleep? How electronic cigarettes work is quite similar. An electronic cigarette (or e-cig) is made operable by three working parts:

  • Cartridge
  • Atomizer
  • Battery

Cartridge
The cartridge resembles a cigarette butt and serves as the mouthpiece a well as a reservoir for the liquid nicotine. The liquid passes from the cartridge to the atomizer and once the liquid is vaporized the vapor returns to the cartridge and is inhaled by the user.

Atomizer
The atomizer vaporizes the liquid nicotine, and is equipped with a simple thread like metal netting used draw the liquid from the cartridge. The atomizer is located at the center of the electronic cigarette in between the battery and cartridge. The atomizers quality will diminish after repeated use due to buildup of residue which means it has a life limit.

Before moving forward it's worth noting that some electronic cigarette brands use a non-reusable atomizer permanently attached to the cartridge. This hybrid technology is termed a "cartomizer" and is slightly more expensive however experienced electronic cigarette users prefer cartomizers because they do not clog, produce a consistent amount of smoke "vapor" volume, and are hassle/mess free. If you are new to electronic cigarettes and hope for it to be a viable substitute which will eliminate or reduce your dependency on traditional cigarettes it is strongly recommended you purchase from a brand that sells cartomizers versus one that uses atomizers and NICOmate is among those brands.

Battery

The electronic cigarette battery is a lithium-ion rechargeable battery and is the largest of the three components. Most e-cigarette batteries have an airflow sensor triggered by simply by drawing breath through the cartridge. A LED resembling the lit part of a cigarette will light up indicating activation. After about 5 seconds the light will repeatedly flash and power will shut off until air flow has completely stopped. The light will also flash rapidly when the battery is out of charge.Batteries are charged via outlet, car, or USB. Some brands also offer a portable charging case which resembles a cigarette pack. Like all rechargeable batteries are rechargeable, the electronic cigarette battery will diminish in quality over time.

Liquid
Electronic cigarette liquid, also known as e-liquid or e-juice consists of the following ingredients:

  • propylene glycol(PG)
  • vegetable glycerin(VG)
  • and/or polyethylene glycol 400(PEG400)
  • flavors
  • nicotine (unless stated otherwise

Electronic cigarette liquid is sold in a bottle used to refill cartridges or as pre-filled disposable cartridges known as cartomizers (previously mentioned). Dozens of flavors are available depending on the brand but the most common are tobacco, menthol, mint, vanilla, strawberry, peach, apple, and chocolate. Nicotine concentrations range from 0 mg to 18 mg.

Electronic Cigarette Starter Kits

Now that you know how electronic cigarettes work you should also know how they are sold. The components mentioned above are available for individual purchase if you simply need replacements but if you are new to electronic cigarettes you will need to begin with an electronic cigarette starter kit. NICOmate starter kits come equipped with 2 batteries, 1 USB charger, 1 AC outlet charger, and 10 disposable cartomizers. Also worth noting is that batteries and chargers have a limited lifetime warranty so should a batteries quality diminish (which is will over time) or should a charger stop working simply send it back and they will send you a new one at no cost!

The question is no longer "how do electronic cigarettes work" but are you looking for a substitute that is substantially less harmful than traditional tobacco cigarette? If you are new to electronic cigarettes or considering switching brands NICOmate would like to invite you with a free trial offer. Simply pay a shipping and handling fee of $14.95. You have 2 weeks to try the product and should you find it to not be a good fit you can send it back.
