Frequently Asked Questions

How does the electronic cigarette work?
What appears to be smoke is nothing more than liquid vapor! The NICOmate device is more than just a clever smoking gadget, it's actually a lot more sophisticated than one might think. There are 3 basic components to every electronic cigarette wrapped up into 2 detachable pieces:
  1. BATTERY, SWITCH & LED:  The battery, switch and LED light are housed in the part of the NICOmate eCigarette that would normally be lit on conventional cigarettes. Within this housing is a long life lithium ion rechargeable battery that supplies power to the device, an electronic chip that regulates the amount of power distribution when the user is puffing, and an LED light that lets you know when the NICOmate electronic cigarette is in use or running low on battery. The eCigarette turns on and off automatically as you inhale. These components are finely tuned to provide consistency and extended battery life.
  2. CARTOMIZER:  The disposable part of the eCigarette (the part that is screwed into the battery) has both an atomizer and the flavored nicotine liquid. Unlike previous generation eCigarettes that provide a single atomizer and refill cartridges for the liquid, NICOmate eCigarettes provide a new atomizer and liquid with each cartomizer. Atomizers become less effective with use and would traditionally become ineffective after only a few refills. Each signature  NICOmate cartomizer is fresh, doesn't leak, and is guaranteed to provide the longevity and consistency you expect.
What is the "smoke" created by the electronic cigarette?
NICOmate replaceable cartomizers are filled with fluid made from a mixture liquid nicotine and propylene glycol. When a user inhales on the NICOmate electronic cigarette, the battery powers an "atomizer" to atomize the liquid into what amounts to inhalable vapor (similar to a fog machine). The vapor is cool and is taken in with a similar feeling of smoke from a traditional cigarette. The flavor of the vapor depends on the NICOmate flavors you choose. Our users have compared the flavor and feeling to that of a hookah (sheesha) and traditional cigarettes.
What chemicals are found in traditional cigarettes?
The chemical contents of an electronic cigarette are far less than what are found in a traditional burning cigarette. Did you know that there are nearly 4000 different chemicals in traditional burning cigarettes...of which 50 are known carcinogens (cancer causing in humans)! Among the list of chemical found in normal burning cigarettes that are NOT found in electronic cigarettes:
  • Benzene (additive found in petroleum)
A colourless cyclic hydrocarbon obtained from coal and petroleum, used as a solvent in fuel and in chemical manufacture. Benzene is a known carcinogen found in burning cigarettes and is associated with leukemia.

  • Formaldehyde (embalming fluid)
A colourless liquid, highly poisonous, used to preserve dead bodies. Formaldehyde is known to cause cancer, respiratory, skin and gastrointestinal problems.

  • Ammonia (household cleaner)
Used as a flavoring, frees nicotine from tobacco turning it into a gas. Often found in dry cleaning fluids.

  • Acetone (nail polish remover)
Fragrant volatile liquid ketone, used as a solvent, for example, nail polish remover

  • Tar
Particulate matter drawn into lungs when you inhale on a lighted cigarette. Once inhaled, smoke condenses and about 70 per cent of the tar in the smoke is deposited in the smoker's lungs.

  • Carbon Monoxide (car exhaust fumes)
An odorless, tasteless and poisonous gas, rapidly fatal in large amounts. The same gas that comes out of car exhausts. This is the main gas in cigarette smoke, formed when the cigarette is lit.

  • Arsenic (rat poison)
    Hydrogen Cyanide (gas chamber poison)
How long does each cartridge last?
A single cartridge can equal as much as a full pack of traditional cigarettes. How long a cartridge will last depends on the user. When the cartridge needs to be replaced, the flavor will get weaker and less vapor will be produced.
How do I get the full value from my cartridges?
It is best to store your cartridges in an upright position with the mouthpiece end facing up. This will distribute the vapor fluid evenly, creating more vapor for longer.
Should I charge my battery before I use it?
The batteries are shipped partially charged, which is the best way to store Lithium Ion batteries. You should always fully charge a new battery straight from the box before using it.
Can I leave my battery plugged in to charge overnight?
Your battery should be taken out of the charger as soon as possible after the light turns green. Like all Lithium Ion batteries, overcharging can ruin the lifespan of your e cigarette.
How long should I expect my cartridges to stay fresh?
Cartridges are fresh for 4-6 months closed in the box and 6-8 weeks opened with the rubber caps taken off. The best way to store them is in a cool dark place.
What is the best way to care for my battery?
Remember not to overcharge the batteries, to unscrew the cartridge if you will not be using the cigarette for an extended period of time, and to carry them around in a protective case. A good care technique is to charge them BEFORE they are totally drained. When you feel them getting a bit weak, just switch to the charged one and put the weak one on charge - in fact you will increase battery life if you don't run them totally down. This will ensure that your batteries last as long as they should.
